Angus is getting its first pride march!

LGBTQIA+

Next year will bring the first parade for our county, with Arbroath being the host town.

There's a dedicated group of LGBTQIA+ volunteers working hard to get everything in place. Lots of consideration is going into the event to make it the most inclusive and safe experience possible.

Some people don't think a pride march is necessary anymore, but as much as things are improving, there is still a lot of hatred and fear towards our gay, lesbian, trans, bi + community.

Under 1 Rainbow held a youth pride event in Forfar and posted some images from the day to local Facebook groups. Angus Pride attended this event. While some comments were really positive, there were a lot of homophobic and transphobic comments too! Comments were so vulgar at times that is spurred a response by a woman called Karen telling everyone how disgusted she was by some of the responses. This post blew up and it was amazing to see so many people speaking out against the vile comments.
I don't understand why someone thinks it's ok to talk to other people like that. Bullying and hating people who are doing no harm, and just trying to be their best self and enjoy life.

I heard a great quote by a School Board President in America called Jackie Goldberg. During a passionate speech against homophobic protestors, she said, "How dare you make them feel afraid because you are!".
How accurate is that line. Hate towards someone or something different to their own self comes from fear. Fear and ignorance. People can have their opinions, but they should also have some decency keeping them to themselves, and not use them as tools to oppress others.

Until this stops being such an issue Pride Marches are important. Visibility is important. The LGBT+ community shouldn't be oppressed in 2024.

I can't wait for Angus Pride!
